One of the big trends in Facebook gaming is that more and more 'name' franchises are finding their way onto the social network. Yesterday, we saw the release of Monopoly on Facebook and Dragon Age Legends (based on the popular 'Dragon Age' video game series') kicks off its closed beta.
Dragon Age Legends is taking on the challenge of creating an in-depth role-playing game on Facebook, and seems to be off to a good start. You can custom create a character and choose their class (warrior, mage or rogue) and then take them into battle. During battle, you can choose from a selection of weapons and spells and, when its over, loot items that can be used to further customize your characters. The game also has a skill tree, where you can buy new moves/powers for your character as well as a castle where you spend your hard-earned coin buying rooms that will, for instance, let you create health potions and other helpful items that can be used in the heat of battle.

As far as depth, Dragon Age Legends has done an impressive job -- but the real question is -- will people find it fun to play? For me, some of the best parts about the Dragon Age video game is the storytelling and the sense of exploration, and that seems to be missing (so far, at least) in this Facebook version of the game. I'll have a more in-depth look at the game soon.
In the meantime, if you're interested in spearing a few Darkspawn on Facebook, you can sign up for the beta on https://beta.dragonagelegends.com/. Once you're in, you'll be able to play through the game, and you'll have a head start when the game officially opens to everyone later in March. If you buy and login to play the upcoming Dragon Age II game by March 15, you will get the Dragon Age Legends BioWare Signature pack that includes Hawke, the protagonist in DA II, and a bundle of exclusive in-game items.
